O-hayo, All!
Stretching the Borders:Japanese Filmmakers in the U.S.A.
By Patrick Macias
The magazine ads and billboards began appearing in Japan late last year. They
pictured Japanese director Takeshi "Beat" Kitano and Hong Kong filmmaker Wong
Kar-wai (the celebrated director of Chung King Express and Happy Together)
astride a motorcycle. In the background loomed a panorama of uninspiring
Hollywood film posters. The slogan read in tones both proud and angry, "Japanese
films are popular everywhere in the world except Japan!" This campaign, cooked
up by Kitano, may have been a slight exaggeration (the runaway success of anime
director Hayao Miyazaki s Princess Mononoke proved that there *is* an audience
willing to turn out for domestic films), but the point was loud and clear.
Japanese films are going through an incredible artistic renaissance, and for
the most part, it s the international community outside of Japan that s dishing
out acclaim and awards.
1997 was a historic year for Japanese cinema abroad. "Beat" Takeshi walked away
from the 54th Venice Film Festival with the awards for both Best Picture and
Best Director for his new cops-versus-gangster opus Hana-bi ("Fireworks").
Asian films also dominated the Cannes Films Festival. Grand master Shohei
Imamura (best known in the West for 1963 s Insect Woman) won his second Palme
d Or (Best Film) prize for his character study of a murderer, The Eel, while 28
year old Naomi Kawase won Best Directorial Debut for her film Suzaku.
Meanwhile, Masayuki Suo s whimsical Shall We Dance did great business at the
American box-office, and paved the way for a new crop of Japanese films
scheduled to hit art houses in 1998.
The rich legacy of Japan s genre and cult films was also exhumed and explored.
The American Cinematheque in Los Angeles hosted the "Outlaw Masters" series,
which featured a selection of classic yakuza movies by director Kinji Fukasaku,
daring "pink" movies by the notorious Koji Wakamatsu, among other films never
screened before in the USA. Likewise, the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley put
together lengthy retrospectives for both black comedy director Yasuzo Masumura
and Cannes champion Shohei Imamura.
It could be that this recent interest in Japanese films has something to do
with the previous success of Hong Kong movies. Thanks to stars like Jackie Chan
and directors like John Woo, audiences are now hungry for all things Asian. But
the appeal of HK films relies heavily on high-energy action sequences, while
Japanese film is traditionally more cerebral and slower moving. Up-coming US
releases like "Beat s" brooding Hana-bi, and Shunji Iwai s Love Letters (to be
retitled "Letters of Love"), make 1998 a potentially critical year for Japanese
film abroad. Will these films be just as well-received at the American
box-office as they have been on the film festival circuit? The final word is up
to you, the audience.
