o ANIME CONS:
Oops, that s a typo. That s not anime cons. That s Anime Con S.
Which is, of course, the sequel to Anime Con R.
This year expect the con staff (who do *not* transform, by the way) to
call upon representatives from throughout North American anime fandom
to defend the hobby against the forces of the Dark Kingdom, aka Andy
Frain.
Rumors that top names from Fox TV are planning a surprise visit are
just that, rumors.
The con chairs could also use your assistance in helping to convince
the female members of their staff to wear the, ahem, abbreviated
skirts that are part of the official con character design uniforms.
For more information, you can send for information by e-mail:
not-sailor-moon@anime.con.s.org
o ANIME IN-JOKES IN STAR TREK: THE NeXT GENERATION and DEEP SPACE 9
What are you doing watching Star Trek when you could watch anime?
Seriously though, long time technical consultant Rick Sternbach (who also
appears regularly in Animerica) claims that on the average, there is at
least one reference per episode. These typically appear on display screens
or set designs, but occasionally make it to dialogue.
There is no known complete list of anime in-jokes available. Besides, anyone
spending that much time searching for in-jokes isn t watching enough anime.
However, Steve Pearl has assembled as thorough a list as possible from a
multitude of sources. E-mail him at starbuck@raven.cybercom.com for a copy.
o DAICON VIDEOS or WHAT IS THAT GIANT RADISH?
Probably the most well known convention to non-Japanese fans because
of its opening videos, Daicon (or Radish-Con in English) isn t even a
strictly anime convention. But the videos are revered by fans here
because they arguably represent the birth of the legendary "Gainax
bounce".
The first short (which was used to open Daicon III) features a large radish
(hence the name), that sprouts open to reveal the young Daicon bunny girl.
Later on, having spent some time cocooned in another radish, an older, more,
er, developed, Bunny Girl returns to do combat with assorted opponents
ranging from the Yamato, the Star Trek Enterprise, and Darth Vader and to
make the universe safe for gratuitous fan service everywhere.
o LEMONCON
After two successful years of Daicon videos, the popular convention was torn
internally by philosophical staff differences. Eventually, the "H contingent"
split off to form LemonCon, which sought to increase the exposure of the
"Gainax bounce" (as if it needed it!) literally.
o PINEAPPLECON
No relation to LemonCon except for the similar theme, this convention is
the premiere vehicle for Pink Pineapple products. Not to be confused with
TentacleCon.
o KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD: THE FIRST OAV AND EPISODE #46
If you hadn t figured it out already, Ayukawa Madoka is the patron goddess
of this newsgroup. The fact that you would even ask this question is a dead
giveaway that you haven t watched enough Orange Road. Go back and watch
some more and you will see the light.

o LASERDISC ANIME GAMES
People who play games aren t watching enough anime.
o LEARNING JAPANESE
What?!?
You mean you actually want to understand what you re watching? How dare
you! Don t you know that anime is best watched in a fog of misunderstanding
and misinterpretation so that you can spend the next six months to a year
arguing with your friends about what it *really* means?
o MEGAZONE 23, ROBOTECH, AND EVERYTHING
Not nearly as satisfying as "Life, the Universe, and Everything."
Oops, am I advocating something that isn t anime? Sorry, won t happen again.
o MIYAZAKI FILMS IN ENGLISH
"Mmmm, Mei was tasty."
Troma Films, the notorious B-movie house that picked up the rights to MY
NEIGHBOR TOTORO, has followed up their straight dub with their own "artistic
interpretation" of the Miyazaki favorite.
In this new film, highly toxic spores from the Wasteland Sea (see Nausicaa)
take root in the forest where Totoro lives. The poisonous growths soon
transform the peaceful, lovable, playful Totoro into a carnivorous but lovable
and playful beast who has periodic cravings for small children. Troma is
marketing this new effort as a new genre: the family horror film.
It s TOTORO crossed with TOXIC AVENGER crossed with CUJO.
o NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND vs. WARRIORS OF THE WIND
Nausicaa would win. Easily.
Therefore, the real question should be:
WHO WOULD WIN IF NAUSICAA WERE TO FIGHT THE SDF-1?
o RANMA 1/2 "WHAT-IF"s
Q What would happen if Ranma were to end?
A This newsgroup could shrink to half its size.
Q What would happen if Shampoo poured boiling water on Ranma s head while
he was standing in a pool of cold water?
A His hair would get wet.
Q What would happen if Ranma were to marry Akane?
A It ll never happen because Genma can t afford the wedding.
Q What would happen if Ranma were to marry Ukyou?
A see previous question
Q What would happen if Akane could cook?
A There d be no need for Kasumi and Hitoshi Doi would be sad.
Q What would happen if Akane fell into Nannichuan, the "man drowning spring"?
A Then, she really would be "kawaikune" to Ranma.
Alternate Answer: She d be able to do "the things that anime characters don t
do" standing up.
Q What would happen if Akane took P-chan into her bath?
A Didn t someone write a Lemon story for this scenario?
Q What if Ranma gets pregnant?
A SHUT UP!!!
o ROBOTECH VS. MACROSS
There is absolutely *no* connection between MACROSS and ROBOTECH. This is a
very clever hoax perpetuated by the real creators of ROBOTECH who would also
have you believe that ROBOTECH is the work of one Carl Macek.
In reality, ROBOTECH is a "garage effort" with artwork by some anonymous artist
known only as "HAL". Voices and music were dubbed in a makeshift San Diego
studio. Oh wait, that s ROBOTECH III. Never mind.
o HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE CARL MACEK S LAST NAME?
And speaking of Carl, there s been a recent perception that his last
name is not pronounced the way it looks. Well, this is just flat out
wrong. Macek s pronunciation is as simple as the mind behind it. In
short, just pronounce what you see:
As in: This "may" make you "sick".
o MATTHEW SWEET S GIRLFRIEND
Are you that lonely that you have to ask about other people s girlfriends?
o OTAKU? WHAT S AN OTAKU?
Otaku? No such thing. Now get out of here, so I can watch the *complete*
Gundam for the 37th time this year.
o WHO OR WHAT IS BEAN BANDIT AND HOW CAN HE DO THE THINGS HE DOES?
He s had five glasses of tequila.
For those of you who haven t been to Mazatlan anytime recently, a refresher:
The Four Stages of Tequila:
1 glass: I m strong
2 glasses: I m good looking
5 glasses: I m bulletproof
9 glasses: I m invisible
o OCCASIONALLY, IN ANIME, SHORT, ROUND VERSIONS OF ANIME CHARACTERS APPEAR.
WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THE JAPANESE FOND OF USING THEM?
That practice is known as "Super-Deforming" characters. It s a way of
making even the most horrible monster into something small and cute.
Nowadays, Super-Deformed characters are appearing *everywhere*. Here
are a couple I can come up with, just off the top of my head. It seems
to be appealing for some strange reason :-):
- Ranma 1/2 Nettouhen
The eyecatch sequences
- Video Girl Ai
The postscript segments
- Dirty Pair
The closing credits of the 10 episode OAV series
- Superdimensional Fortress Macross
The opening credits (when the series was rerun recently)
- Gunbuster
The science lessons
- Gall Force
10 Little Gall Force
- Patlabor on Television
The first eyecatch sequences
There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that there are super deformed
characters in SD Gundam.
o IS THERE A ROLE-PLAYING GAME SYSTEM FOR RECORD OF LODOSS WAR?
Stop asking about activities that will reduce the amount of anime you
can watch!
o WHO IS EVERYONE S FAVORITE KNIGHT SABER?
Linna.
We interviewed a small collection of carnivorous man-eating anime and
sentai monsters. Here s what they had to say regarding their favorite
Knight Saber.
"Priss was too grisly and those bits of broken glass and shrapnel kept
getting caught in between my teeth."

"Nene was too easy to catch. Half the fun of a good meal is the

"Yeah, and she was a bit too plump on the sides!"
"Linna s athleticism and well-toned muscles made for a very tasty snack."
"Sylia? Yeeccch, those cybernetics give me heartburn."
"Meeeeeeooooowwwwwrrrrrrr!!!" (--Jingoro)
There you have it. The final word. Five out of six monsters
recommend Linna for their colleagues that chew Knight Sabers.
o WHY WON T THERE BE ANY MORE RIDING BEAN OR BUBBLEGUM CRISIS OAVS?
"Becuase they re bastards and they hate you."
o WHAT ARE JAPANESE PHONE CARDS AND PHONE BOOKS AND WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO
DO WITH ANIME/MANGA?
These are actually two different things.
-Phone Cards:
Ma Bell in Japan is still a national monopoly / government bureacracy.
Nippon Telephone and Telegraph (NTT) charges 10 yen per time unit for
local calls. 10 yen coins are an annoyance to carry around. Sort of
like a pocket full of nickles. But if you stuff a larger denomination
coin into a phone, you don t get change for time/money not used.
Enter the telephone card. It is a cheap piece of plastic the size of
a credit card with a magnetic widget inside. You buy them from a
vending machine or a kiosk (in denominations ranging from 500 to 5000
yen). The green phones are (mostly) wired to accept phone cards (yes,
there are different color phones depending on the type of call).
Stuff a telephone card into the slot and you don t have to worry about
carrying around a pocket full of nickles and the magnetic widget
counts off each time unit as you use it. There cards are particularly
useful for international calls. Each time unit costs 100 yen and they
count off very quickly.
With all these little plastic cards running around, somebody in
Japan got the idea of putting pretty pictures on them. Like
mountains, or rivers, or forests, or movie stars, or whatever.
Certain types of fans like to collect these cards (sort of like
a cross between expensive postage stamps and baseball cards).
For these fans, companies print up limited runs of cards with
desireable pictures on them and then sell them for double the
face value (spend 1000 yen to get a 500 yen card). The fans
value these cards as long as they are not used at all. So
they are another anime/manga collectable.
- from a post by Eric Kouba
- Phone Books
These have nothing to do with manga except for the fact that, if you
were in Japan, you could use one to look up the phone number of your
favorite anime or manga store.
o WHY DO JAPANESE ANIME MAGAZINES COST SO MUCH IN THE U.S.?
Anime is an expensive hobby. Stop complaining.
Who do you think you are? C-ko?
o WHO OR WHAT IS THIS PUMA PERSON?
PUMA once on r.a.anime.
PUMA write funny posts.
PUMA had biggest funniest .sig!
PUMA had other name -- Keith Andreano!
PUMA otaku at finest!
PUMA should represent us all!
PUMA s fave manga: NAUSEA of the Valley of Passing Wind! Now that

o PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT JAPANESE HONORIFICS AND TERMS OF ADDRESS
Here are the most common honorifics and terms of address.
-sama Very respectful ending. Not normally used with someone s
names. Used to people of superior status, like your boss,
or to your guests as a host. Envelopes should be addressed
with "-sama". A shopkeeper might call a customer
"o-kyaku-sama" (Respected Mr. Customer).
sensei A respectful term meaning "teacher", also used with
physicians. Frequently used to refer to experts in a
field or people in any respected occupation. Lawyers,
master chefs, fashion designers, and even some manga
artists are called "sensei". Sometimes used like an
honorific with a name or title, as in "kouchou-sensei"
(Mr. Principal, Sir).
-san Usual term of respect. It can stand for Mr. and Ms., and
is attached to either first or last names, and names of
occupations like "o-mawari-san" (Mr. Policeman). You
use it for strangers and people you don t know well, but
are more or less the same social status. When in doubt,
use "-san".
However, never use "-san" with your own name or your
family members names. Also, it shouldn t be used to refer
to famous people, since a small degree of intimacy is
implied.
High school girls are usually called "-san".
sempai Somebody in the same general social class, but socially
superior to you. "Sempai" can also be used as an honorific.
Older students may be addressed respectfully as sempai,
especially by girls.
-kun Used by a socially superior male to a socially inferior
male. Familiarly used among male students and boys who
grew up together. Recently, some teachers call girl
students and some bosses call office ladies with "-kun",
but it s still considered a masculine suffix.
High school boys are called "-kun". Girls go from "-chan"
to "-san" in high school, but boys go through a period of
"-kun" in between.
- Calling someone by a family name alone is being very
familiar (or rough). Calling someone by given name
alone is less rough, but more familiar. Using no
honorific when one is expected can be an expression of
contempt.
-chan Intimate form of address. Families that are close use it,
and "-chan" is often used to, and by, very young children.
Used with given names, abbreviations of given names, and
nicknames, but not family names. Children who grow up
together (like Madoka and Hikaru), may keep using "-chan"
into adulthood. Note: to call a social superior "-chan"
without reason is very insulting.
Family terms are also common terms of address.
(Note: One may sometimes identify a person by taking the listener s
point of view, as when a man refers to himself as "father" to his
children.)

These six forms of address occur a lot. Children call strangers
by the above family member terms, depending on whether what type of
relative they consider them old enuf to be. (A good example of
this is a scene recently described in this newsgroup where a child
addresses a question to a young woman as "oba-san", and she responds,
referring to herself as "oNEE-san".)

I ve marked with a * the ones that come up frequently. Learning them
will make watching unsubtitled anime more pleasant, but there s no
need to memorize them, all at once.
You may notice that the very rough words for "you" are often
translated as curses. These are pronouns that insultingly imply
the speaker s superiority. They come up often as fighting words.
- From a posting by Theresa Martin
o WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND ROBOTECH AND IT S COMPONENT SHOWS?
As has been revealed above, ROBOTECH is a skillful hoax, so this question
is immaterial.
o HAS ANYONE SEEN THAT MUSIC VIDEO FROM THE GUNHED MOVIE?
Yes
o WHAT ARE JIS KANJI CODES AND HOW DO I USE THEM?
For everything you ever wanted to know about JIS kanji codes, and a
list of programs that can use it for many kinds of computers,
anonymous ftp pub/JIS/japan*.inf from ucdavis.edu, or
pub/anime/lyrix/JIS.inf from romulus.rutgers.edu. I [Steve Pearl]
am willing to email it to you upon request if you cannot ftp.
(From a posting by Theresa Martin)
o WHAT IS THIS ANIME MUCK AND HOW DO I ACCESS IT?
If I tell you, you ll only be encouraged to do something that isn t watching
anime, so I won t answer.
o WHAT DOES AD POLICE REALLY STAND FOR? DOES IT STAND FOR:
a)Advanced Defense Police
^ ^ ^
b) ADvanced Police
^^ ^
c) About-to-Die Police
^ ^ ^
According to Animerica, the answer is:
a) Advanced Defense Police (per ANIMERICA #0)
^ ^
Of course according to the computer terminals in "Scoop Chase" (BGC8)
it s ADvanced Police.
^^ ^
Given the Japanese people s famous accuracy and consistancy in using
English, it is quite possible that both A & B are right.
o WHAT ARE THE LEGALITIES OF COPYING FANSUBS?
Everything you do is illegal.
More specifically.
Copying fansubs is illegal. Making fansubs is illegal. Asking about
fansubs is illegal. Asking about fansubs on the Net is even more
illegal. Looking at fansubs is illegal. Talking about fansubs is
illegal. And thinking about fansubs is punishable by one, two, or all
of the following: death, Vogon poetry, or the Compleat British
edition of the Manga Video library.
o WHAT IS THIS SAILOR MOON THING, ANYHOW?
Pain. Pure unadulterated Pain. Take the intellectual level of
Gilligan s Island, splice it with a Sentai Show, throw in a little
Girls with Guns , a level of mindless cuteness not seen outside of
Barney and Friends , and puree.
Puree long. Puree hard. Puree so you never have to open the blender
and take a look at the unholy mess that you have made. But it s like a
sore, you don t WANT to pick it, everyone tells you it s bad to pick it,
but you HAVE to. Passing beyond the level of normal urge, beyond
obsession, like a force of nature-and you take a look at that unholy
creation.
If you re lucky, your brain will survive the first dose-but you re now
hopelessly addicted.
Pain. An essay in Pain. Every word spoken by Usagi is just another
stanza in an epic poem. Written by a bad poet. One of those ones who
insists on rhyming. And writes about lilies.
--Mike Collins
Sailor Moon is high art. A true literary masterpiece of the battle
between good and evil in a junior high setting. It ranks right up
there with Edith Wharton, Joseph Conrad and English compulsory read that you really can t stand>. The characters
demonstrate a depth unseen since the enigmatic Captain Nemo of Jules
Verne fame. (No, this is *not* a veiled NaXia ref.) The plots are an
intricate masterpiece of complex relationships of a girl and her
friends trying to survive a normal school life while hiding their
heroic subpersonas. And the art! I haven t seen drawings this
realistic and beautiful since "Black" or maybe "Whaam!" by Roy
Lichtenstein.
If you re looking for an in-depth, beautiful, complex story that
requires thought and introspection, then this is the title for you.
But, if you re looking for harmless, bubblegum mind candy that will
massage your brain, you should definitely look elsewhere, like maybe
"The Name of the Wind is Amnesia," "Windaria," or "Wings of Honneamise".
So, how come I can t stop from snickering?

o IS THE CRITERION EDITION OF AKIRA SUBTITLED? HOW IS THE EXTRA FOOTAGE?
Who cares? As long as it s not dubbed!
o WHAT S THIS I HEAR ABOUT ROTTING KOR LASER DISKS
Silly human. You can t hear rot. But, you can sure smell it! And those
rotting LDs can stink up an apartment, so you better stay away from them
or you may feel like (a la PUMA) Nausea of the Valley of Passing Wind.
o HEY! MY BGC 1-3 LD FROM ANIMEIGO IS HISSING! WHAT S THE DEAL?
Just goes to show you how much a snake Mason is.
He s even affected your LD!
o WHAT IS TURBO TITLER AND WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
TurboTitle by Robert Jenks, is an Amiga program for doing subtitles.
You can find it in the Fish collection of Public Domain/Shareware
programs. It is on Fish 530, v0.80. And I also recommend getting one

of the Fish database programs: Aquarium, KingFisher, or Fishcat.
You can get Fish disks via ftp at grind.isca.uiowa.edu or uxc.cso.uiuc.edu

o WHAT TV SYSTEM DOES HONG KONG USE?
Whatever one the Chinese don t use.
o ARE MICHITAKA KIKUCHI & KIA ASAMIYA THE SAME PERSON?
Only on alternate Thursdays.
On the third Sunday of each month, Asamiya ceases to exist for the entire
24 hour period. And during the full moon of every odd month, Kikuchi becomes
Urushibara Satoshi instead.
And don t try looking at them the same time lest you do really screwy things
with the Heisenberg Indeterminacy Principle.
o HOW MANY RUMIC WORLD OAVS WERE ANIMATED AND WHICH ONES WERE THEY?
(dedicated to Bill Moakler)
The Rumic World OAVs are:
Fire Tripper
The SuperGal
Laughing Target
One Pound Gospel
Mermaid s Forest / Mermaid s Scar
And finally the Samurai, which is "*not* a Rumic World OAV!"
o WHAT IS IRC?
A black hole from which r.a.a. rs almost never return. Don t go there.
Besides, we never talk about anime there anyway.
o WHY DOES THE AUDIO IN THE STREAMLINE NADIA TAPE SOUND SO BAD?
Because Nadia is evil.
o IS SYLIA FROM BGC A BOOMER?
No, almost all the baby boomers are thankfully dead when Sylia is born.
o IS THERE A HUMAN VERSION OF RYO-OH-KI?
Yes. In fact, there s a larger assortment of -oh-ki s then you might
initially think.
Ryo-oh-ki: Well, we all know who she is. Feed her carrots and she ll
take you to the other side of the galaxy.
Fed-oh-ki: The surliest of the species. Feed him meat or he ll
insult you. Of course, if you feed him, he ll still insult you, but
he ll be more polite about it.
Sho-oh-ki: The president and major guiding force behind Oh-ki-Con!
Often seen in the company of BEAR-oh-ki. Feed him meat (as you can
see, most human -oh-ki s are carnivorous) and he ll transform into the
president of Oh-ki Expo.
Kei-oh-ki: A being of divine inspiration. One day a goddess granted
him a wish and now he can transform into a spaceship at will.
Kou-oh-ki: The rarest of the breed because they have a very brief
life span due to a defective gene. The Kou-oh-ki abhors carrots, and,
of course, everyone knows that -oh-ki s (except for the carnivorous
exceptions above) survive exclusively on carrots.
Koko-wa-oh-ki: Only one known specimen in existence. The love
interest of Hasukawa Kazuya in the Jyurai incarnation of Greenwood,
Igarashi Miiyaaaaa.
o WHAT IS ANIMEGO S POLICY FOR RELEASING THEIR TITLES ON LASER DISC?
Release 1: Special bonus for advance buyers. You get the noise, bad tracking
and hiss for no additional charge.
Release 2: Tracks ok, but you still get the noise.
Release 3: "Madoka Ayukawa" changed to "Ayukawa Madoka" whether she is
a character in the associated story or not
Release 4: All `a s in subtitles mysteriously changed into `o s
And never forswear 3M
o WHAT IS JACOSUB AND HOW CAN I CONTACT THE AUTHOR?
JACOsub is a shareware package for doing (hopefully) professional
video titling work on the Amiga. It is not a finished product; at the
moment it only plays timed scripts. It does not have its own timing or
editing capabilities. The script format is probably the most powerful and
flexible one out there, and the program s capabilities (non-sequential,
overlapping events, multi-buffered display, on-the-fly time adjustments)
make for quite a productive program despite its lack of timing/editing.
Version 1.6d is the current version and is available on ftp.ics.uci.edu.
The Support BBS for JACOsub is Anime Central, fido address 1:363/137,
phone number (407) 645-2241, up to 14,400 baud. There is a file area
that contains the latest version of the software, plus several JACOsub
scripts that users have contributed. The current version is
JCOSUB14.LZH, and may be file-requested through fidonet.
The author of JACOsub is Alex Matulich and he can be reached at
alex.matulich@oau.org or alex%bilver@peora.sdc.ccur.com or even
...uunet!bilver!alex or bilver!alex@uunet.uu.net might work.
o IS NAUSICAA WEARING PANTS?
No, she is a student of the Bill Clinton/Ted Kennedy school of government.
o WHAT IS "H"?
Almost everything in your collection, you perv!
o WHAT S THIS ABOUT QUANTUM LEAP AND AKIRA?
The rumors that Sam will be leaping into Akira are all mixed up. The real
story is that Sam will be leaping into Otomo Katsuhiro, the creator of Akira.
Word is that Sam s goal is to attempt to make Akira understandable in full.
And to also get that idiot reviewer from the LA Times to appreciate anime.
Sam could be Otomo for a long time.
o HOW COME THIS FAQ DOESN T MAKE ANY SENSE THIS MONTH?
Do you really have to ask this question? As if the anime acronyms
didn t give it away!
Ok, for those of you haven t caught on yet (or somehow are reading this
the wrong day),
APRIL FOOL!!!

The democrats have been using the didive and conquer for decades. Poor against rich, black against white. IT is about time blacks got angry and realized they have been used by the left. Women, it is about time they got angry and voted (some of them) for the qualified candidate, not the best looking one. http://wserpaq.com [url=http://bpoedi.com]bpoedi[/url] [link=http://tuvcypihkwb.com]tuvcypihkwb[/link]

Interesting! I was wondering if you could pvidore a few tips on what some of those small ways to make meals more nutritious might be, or a link to the article you mention? Also, do you know of any research about how what people eat at conferences affects their ability to absorb information? Thanks!
