That s right. Anime is NOT a genre, it s a MEDIUM. There are kiddie
shows, action shows, comedies, romances, and, uh, tentacle-fests
too.

=============================================================================
Today there is an extensive report on Pokemon, anime, and seizures
on ABCNews.com at
http://www.abcnews.com/sections/world/DailyNews/flicker_splash.html
Overall, the report is fairly good (particularly the part about the
history of anime). However, they are running the usual mindless
viewer polls that ask things like "Do you think Japanese anime is
unsuitable for children?" yes/no. Of course that is studpidly
oversimplistic, like asking "Do you think American movies are
unsuitable for children?" yes/no. Of course this poll is placed on
the page entitled "Anime s Dark Side" where the reporter implies that
the Aum Shinrikyo nerve gas attack can be blamed on anime and manga.
These reader s polls are notoriously inaccurate, but it s the sort
of "news candy" that will get picked up by ABC later as in "84% of viewers
polled felt that anime was not suitable for children" and never bother
to explain where that "fact" came from.
What can you do about it?
You can vote.
So far only about 300 people have voted on this question. There are a
lot more than 300 people reading rec.arts.anim.misc. Go to that website
http://www.abcnews.com/sections/world/DailyNews/flicker_darkside.html
and vote no. I don t know if it s smart enough to tell that you ve
already voted, but you can reload the page and vote again. If enough of
us vote we can overwhelm the vote and maybe someone at ABC News will
notice that there is a groundswell of support for anime in spite of the
bad press they gave it.
You can also go to
http://www.abcnews.com/sections/world/DailyNews/flicker_marketing.html
and vote no to the question "Does violence in cartoons promote antisocial
behavior in children?"
If you feel moved to send email to ABCNews.com, please be polite and state
your disagreement in a brief, logical letter. Fanboy rants only hurt anime s
image and make ABC think they re right about us.
Now GO VOTE!
