=============================================================================
If this has been done before then I apologize in advance. And so, I
present:
The life cycles of the Average Anime Fan and the Otaku.
Average Anime Fan:
--------------------
Stage 1 - Initial fascination
The first stage will occur after you watch your first anime (provided
it s
something good of course). You immediately want to see more and more
anime, so you rent, buy, and borrow what you can. You ll probably end
up seeing a lot of anime in a brief period, savoring the feeling of
discovery in your new hobby.
Stage 2 - The temporary break or "What the hell was I thinking?" stage
This stage will be triggered by any number of things. You might get an
anime overdose and start to get bored. Or you might end up running
really low on funds. Or your girlfriend/boyfriend (who would rather go
out on a Friday night) will dump you. Or anything. Basically something
will stop you from watching anime. Regret may accompany you in this
stage. You ll probably not watch anything for a couple weeks, but then
gradually get back into your hobby.
Stage 3 - The average fan stage
Having taken a step back to analyze your hobby, you ll resume, but in
moderation. You ll probably watch a couple videos a week (give or
take), attend a convention, and occasionally go on an 18-hour anime
marathon. That last event might trigger the next stage...
Stage 4 - Temporary burn-out
This is similar to stage 2, except you ll accept it more readily this
time. You ll probably take a break for a couple weeks, go see some live
movies, and generally relax before re-entering stage 3. Generally this
stage will occur at random intervals throughout a year. However, this
stage may not leave, leading us to the final stage...
Stage 5 - The end of your hobby or "Anyone want to buy this slightly
used copy of Akira?" stage
That s it. It s over. Finito. You finally decide to give up anime.
Many things could trigger this, but it ll probably be a combination of
old age and boredom. You end up selling off most of your tapes (keeping
the really good ones to show your grandchildren). Chances are you won t
return to your hobby, but maybe, in the distant future, stage 1 will
resurface beginning the whole cycle over again.
The Otaku:
-----------
Stage 1 - Initial fascination
This stage will be identical (more or less) with the average anime fan.
Unfortunately, the next stage is dramatically different.
Stage 2 - Total obsession
You go from "Wow! I m watching Ranma 1/2 for the first time!" to "Wow!
I m watching Ranma 1/2 for the 387th time and I m still noticing things
I never noticed before!". Your significant other has left you, you use
every scrap of spare cash for new anime, and you exist on a diet of
Kraft Dinner, microwave popcorn, and Mountain Dew. You are totally
obsessed. But the obsession doesn t end. You go to conventions, make
costumes, and socialize with no one but other otaku. But just when you
think you couldn t get any worse, stage 3 kicks in.
Stage 3 - Learning Japanese (for all the wrong reasons)
You ve exhausted your supply of fresh anime, watched Ranma 1/2 for the
1000th time, and you need something new. Hey! There s always the
original stuff available in Japan. So you decide to learn Japanese.
Once you become fluent (more or less), the next stage takes hold...
Stage 4 - Visiting Japan (for all the wrong reasons)
You finally save enough cash for a weekend in Japan. You head over,
stock up, and return with dozens of new videos to watch. You might
decide to try fansubbing at this point, so you can share your bounty
with the rest of North America. However, all these trips get to be
expensive so you do the only thing possible...
Stage 5 - Moving to Japan (for all the wrong reasons)
Leaving behind everyone and everything behind you move to Japan to
immerse yourself in the wonderful world of anime (or a cheap apartment
with no cable). And you are never heard from again...
That s all for now.
